1. How long have you lived in Boston?
I’m originally from Florida, went to school in Maine (Bates College), and then moved to the Boston area about 20 years ago. Along the way, I’ve lived in Brighton, Somerville, Beacon Hill, Milton, Stoneham, Andover and now live in Milford with my husband and two boys.
2. What does your typical morning routine consist of?
First things first, let the dog out and have a cup of coffee. My kids are in middle and high school, so we’ll chat about our day over breakfast, then I eye the clock to make sure they don't miss their buses…which is a work in progress. Once they’re off, I start returning emails and prioritizing my day.
3. Did you have any other careers before becoming a photographer?
Believe it or not I studied Economics and French, and worked for an investment firm in Boston doing equity research. I really enjoyed the people I worked with, but I knew I needed a different industry. I moved over to a startup, where we built our own processes and solved problems on the fly. It was new territory for everyone and definitely a team effort. I learned a ton from both businesses, especially since they were polar opposite environments. After that, I decided it was time to finally make a move as a photographer, something that fueled me and I had wanted to do for years.
4. How long have you been a photographer?
Professionally since 2001, but I was shooting long before that, especially when I traveled abroad in college to France, Bali & Australia.
5. Explain your style of photography in your own words and what you aim to accomplish in every photoshoot.
I take the approach of a storyteller or documentarian. I’m there to put a lens on who a client is and what their world looks like - whether it’s one part of their identity or all of it. I move quickly, with as little gear as is appropriate, so my attention is focused on the client and we can find a state of flow. More often than not, I’m searching for natural light that fits the shoot’s need. When that’s not possible, I light an image so it looks natural, not flat, or spin it with more directional, narrowed light.
6. What would you like people who work with you to remember about you?
That I make it easy. I’m an understanding, low-maintenance but organized person, and know how busy we all are. Client relationships are my top priority. I want them to feel comfortable knowing I have everything handled once the shoot is booked, so they can focus on other things, and that their images will be delivered in record time.
7. What is your ideal client?
This ties in with the importance of client relationships for me. I love working with new clients, but there’s a trust that gets developed over time with long-term clients. There’s a palpable calm between us that I understand what they need, we’ll collaborate together and work through and bumps in the road, and then ultimately deliver what they need. The space is there to be creative and have fun, whether it’s headshots or something more hands on like design work or a team building activity on a ropes course.
8. How do you balance work life and home life?
Scheduling, scheduling, scheduling and communication. My husband and I share calendars and somehow manage to get everything (most things anyway) done. I shoot on location, which means I’m somewhere different every day. So, we are constantly looking at our calendars, figuring out daily logistics, and carpooling. It truly does take a village!
9. What is your favorite thing to do to relax?
Anything around water - swimming, sailing, snorkeling & reading. I grew up on the beach and any chance I get, I’m looking for a lake or an ocean.
10. Do you have any pets?
Penny is our lovable & loyal golden doodle, who’s happy place is underwater diving for rocks or in the garden with her head buried in a tomato bush.
